La Liga is reportedly planning to launch legal action against FIFA after the announcement of the World Cup expansion to 48-teams from the original 32 team tornament starting on 2026

Reports say that the Spanish La Liga wants to stop the expansion, after it claims that it was not consulted on the decision, which is required by FIFA.

“We are not happy at all. We are providing extra players but we have not been consulted. We are looking at ways in which we can challenge today’s decision.”

Per the world governing body, the FIFA Council voted unanimously in favour of the increased tournament, an idea that has been pushed by president Gianni Infantino

Many have speculated that this was most likely a financial decision, increasing their revenue by almost $1 billion. La Liga’s gripe is most probably a more taxing tournament for the players, potentially adversely affecting the quality of club football in the regular season.
